"The maturity of the late works of significant artists does not resemble the kind one finds in fruit. They are, for the most part, not round, but furrowed, even ravaged. Devoid of sweetness, bitter and spiny, they do not surrender themselves to mere delectation." Perhaps the most significant philosopher of music of the 20th century, Theodor W. Adorno, wrote these words in his 1937 essay on Beethoven’s late style. Whether he was right in general and about Beethoven in particular will be demonstrated by a concert program that ranges from Bach to Beethoven and Liszt to Kurtág. Other composers will also appear in the conversation related to the concert: those who created their late works at a young age, or whose last pieces certainly "do not surrender themselves to mere delectation."
Dialogues with (the) Music is an animated discussion between pianist Gábor Csalog and musicologist Gergely Fazekas in the first part of the concert. In the second part, Gábor Csalog performs the pieces in their entirety.
